As we so often do World of Books asked a local book group what their opinion is of our book of the week – ‘Good Omens’ by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.
“This is definitely not the sort of book I would ever have picked up if I didn’t have to read it for the book group. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was great! It was funny and witty, and as a result of reading this, I will now definitely read another Terry Pratchett book, which I’d been putting off doing for years!”
“I literally laughed out loud – at home, on the bus, it didn’t matter. People probably think I’m a bit odd now!”
“To be honest I didn’t understand it all. It lost me a fair few times. The sheer amount of characters was just too much to make up all the connections. I’ve never really been into the fantasy genre, and this one won’t be getting me into it I’m afraid”
“I’ll admit it did witter away at times so I actually skipped quite a lot, but other than that I really enjoyed it. I loved the friendship between Aziraphale and Crowley – it was hilarious at times. They could even have had their own book and I’d have been happy to read it”
“This book is interesting because it can be taken at face value, i.e. satirical, or deeper issues can be considered like the commentary on religion is offers. I read somewhere that it could also be considered as being political, but completely disagree. That aside, there were some pretty bizarre images created in it like the road full of fish, or a nuclear machine being instantly replaced by a sherbet lemon… I think I actually found it quite tiring to read because it was so strange and out of my comfort zone. I wouldn’t rule out another book by the authors though”
