Seven Reasons to buy Used Books

By Rebecca Reed, CRM Executive

As a used bookseller, we really do find that buying used books is the way to go. Our seven reasons below are a great starting point for getting to know World of Books and realising how great a used book can be.

  1. Most importantly you will save money

An obvious reason, of course. New books can set you back a pretty penny, but you are guaranteed to save at least half when you buy used. Did you know last year World of Books customers saved 66% when they bought a used book rather than the new equivalent?

  1. It is better for the environment

New paper books carry quite a large footprint, with millions of trees destroyed and millions of tonnes of CO2 produced each year. Yes, the latest book is a must-have but why not do your part for the environment and pick up one of the millions of used copies already in circulation? World of Books saves 26,000 tonnes of books from being sent to landfill sites each year; that is equivalent to 442,000 trees.

  1. Be a part of the shared book history

When you buy a used book, you never know what you are going to get. Inscriptions in margins or dedications in the front page. You’re taking part in a shared history and better yet, you’re free to add your own little mark along the way too.

  1. That old book smell

New books smell the same. It’s the fresh off the press smell. Used books, however, have spent years, decades and occasionally centuries collecting their own unique scent. There’s the British Library type smell, the well-loved by an elderly lady smell and then, of course, the least pleasant, this book has suffered water damage smell.

  1. The vintage covers (swoon…)

What’s not to like about, a vintage edition of your favourite book? Those editions are far more interesting than a recent re-releases. If you’re interested in rare and vintage covers, you should definitely head over to World of Rare Books and check out their collection of books which are truly stunning.

  1. You will read more

You’ll be prompted to finish your current book when there’s a stack of equally compelling reads on your shelf. When you can buy affordable used books at World of Books, you’ll have no problem keeping that stack high.

  1. The books are already broken in.

Books shouldn’t be pampered. Instead of worrying about keeping a crisp and stain free book, pick up a used copy. The binding is probably a little bent and you may find some warped pages along the way, but you can throw it in your bag and carry on. Used books have been around the block for a while – they’ve seen things you wouldn’t believe. We are certain they will survive a further short journey or two in your backpack.

I love used books,, I don’t think I have ever bought one, you should try mag,s like woodcarving and whittling they are the only one’s I have to pay full price for and it is a shame they don’t re sell them.

  2. I buy lots of old books. Many of the titles I’m interested in have been out of print for years (Golden Age science fiction, John D. MacDonald’s Travis McGee series) so used is the only way to get them. I am pretty good at guessing the decade a book was published in, from the cover design.

A few years ago I bought about a dozen books in a used bookshop in Katoomba in Australia, to find that they’d all been printed in Aylesbury in England, not twenty miles from where I live. That’s quite a round trip.
