Pros and Cons – E-readers vs Books

Pros and Cons | E-Reader Vs Books

By Rebecca Reed, CRM Executive

We just love books! It would be hard not to love books doing what we do. The feel and smell of a tangible book is something that many like us find comforting.

A fair few years ago, printed word was under threat. There was a new kid in the playground and they were threatening to make our beloved books obsolete. The e-reader.

Now when the e-reader was launched, fellow bookworms went mad, they were torn between their favourite books and this new device that really does not compare with regards to the portability. We have out-weighed the pros and cons of both e-readers and books.

The Pros | E-readers vs Books

Portability

You can not deny how portable the e-reader is, you could be carrying 5000 books in your bag at any one time and yet an e-reader would not weigh the same as 5000 books.

Cheaper New Releases

When buying new books, most of which are at around the £8-£15 mark. E-books are considerably cheaper than a tangible paperback/hardback. However, buying secondhand books are even less, our store is packed full of great books even bestsellers from 2017 from £2.45. You can shop our store here.

Secret Reading

There is this one pro for an e-reader, if you were ever embarrassed to read a certain book *cough* Fifty Shades *cough* in public, you can, by all means, read it on your e-reader as the people around you would be none the wiser.

The Cons | E-readers and Books

No Used e-books

As we have already highlighted, there are no used e-books. You can not replicate the sense of a used book and the story it tells of its previous owner/owners.

No Lending Options

We have heard that you can lend books using Amazon Prime, but the recipient also has to be an Amazon Prime member. The idea of lending books to your friends, family and colleagues is great, many do get anxiety over it but the thought of sharing your favourite book with a loved one is always the best.

Bathtub reading

Now with an e-reader, this relaxing past-time becomes quite a hazardous one. We wouldn’t want to drop that in the bath!

As you can tell we have come to a fairly easy conclusion. We do prefer books, and in recent years books have made a booming come back, we are pleased to see that books are here to stay, and also it’s okay to own an e-reader, we do also use both. The e-reader on our morning commutes and books at home in our little reading nooks.

Which do you prefer? E-reader or book? Tell us in the comments below.

Expectation: new book is my first choice, used book the second and ebook the last.
Reality: Look for used book first, then e-book. New book is the last last choice lol.

I really like used books. They smell nice, I can afford them, and know that lots of other people have handled and read them. Going into a second-hand books shop is lovely; the smell, the quiet, knowing that I may find something wonderful that I’ve never read or known about before.
