Author Focus | Celebrating James Patterson

By Rebecca Reed

One of the most well-known thriller authors of this generation, James Patterson is taking the world by storm. In addition to his thriller stories, he has branched into children’s and young adult fiction with the hope of making reading exciting for all ages.

In a world, full of gadgets and tech items that seem to take up the time of the majority of children and young adults under the age of 15, reading a book has really taken a backseat.

James Patterson intends to stop that. With millions of dollars being donated to schools, colleges and universities around America, he is on a mission to get children reading.

In January 2016, James had sold over 350 million books worldwide, and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most number one New York Times bestsellers.  He is also the first author to feature as number one on both the New York Times and Children’s bestsellers.

James began writing at the age of 19, he dropped out of university and became a junior copywriter for the advertising agency J Walter Thompson, eventually becoming CEO of its North American Company.

In 1976 he published The Thomas Berryman Number, this was initially turned down by a whopping 31 publishers. Once published it won the Edgar Award for the best first novel.
